Why Smart Students Miss Questions They Know

Every score report I go through with a family has a version of the same moment. A student misses a handful of questions on material they clearly know, and the parent asks some version of “how did they miss that?” It’s rarely a knowledge problem. Most of the time, it’s the test doing exactly what it’s designed to do.

The ACT and the digital SAT aren’t testing whether a student is smart. They’re testing whether a student can recognize a specific set of traps under time pressure, on both the reading side and the math side. Once you see the traps, you can teach a student to spot them. Here’s what I see most often, and how I fix it.

The reading trap: an interpretation isn’t an answer

English class trains students to interpret. A good class rewards a well-argued reading of a text, even a subjective one. Standardized reading questions don’t work that way. There’s no room for a “reasonable” interpretation that isn’t directly supported by the passage. If it’s not proven in the text, it’s not the answer, no matter how plausible it sounds.

I teach four common wrong answer types in the reading section, and one of the most common is exactly this: an answer that a thoughtful reader might infer, but that has no direct evidence behind it. The other common trap works the opposite way. Students remember roughly what the passage said and answer from memory instead of the text in front of them, and wrong answers are often written to match that memory almost exactly, changed just enough to be false.

Both traps come from the same habit: trusting a general impression of the passage instead of what’s actually written down. The fix isn’t reading more carefully in the sense of reading slower. It’s knowing how to locate exactly where an answer lives in the passage and checking the claim against it directly, every time.

The math trap: solving for the wrong thing

A common one in math: a student works a problem, lands on a number, sees that number sitting right there in the answer choices, and picks it, without checking that it actually answers the question being asked. Test writers count on this. The wrong answer choices are frequently built from the most common calculation errors on purpose, so the “obvious” answer is often the trap, not the shortcut.

This is exactly why I stress a consistent problem-solving process rather than just getting to an answer. The extra step, confirming what the question is actually asking before locking in a choice, is what catches this every time.

The data trap: intimidation and careless reading

Any question built around a graph, table, or unfamiliar-looking data set creates the same problem twice. First, students see something that looks like it requires outside knowledge, their confidence drops, and they start guessing instead of reading carefully. Second, even once they calm down, the data itself is often laid out in a way that invites a careless misread: the wrong row, the wrong axis, a label that looks like the one you need but isn’t.

On the ACT, this shows up constantly in the Science section, where no outside science knowledge is actually required. Every answer is sitting in the graphs and passages provided. The digital SAT has its own version of this in data-heavy Math questions and in some Reading and Writing questions built around a chart or table. Same trap, different test. The fix is a consistent way of marking up a passage or figure before answering, so a student knows what to expect and isn’t reading it cold under pressure.

The grammar trap: there’s always a rule

Students often assume questions like “which transition works best here” or “which conclusion fits” are matters of taste, since nothing about them feels like a grammar rule they were taught in school. They’re not matters of taste. Every one of these questions has a specific, learnable rule behind the correct answer, whether it’s on the ACT’s English section or inside the grammar and rhetoric questions built into the SAT’s Reading and Writing section. Once a student knows the actual rule, these stop being guesswork.

The other common version of this trap is rushing. A student reads an answer choice, sees that it works grammatically up to that point in the sentence, and picks it without reading the rest of the sentence, where it actually breaks. Reading the full sentence, every time, catches this immediately.

The pacing trap: fighting a question you can’t win

This one applies everywhere: every section, both tests. Sticking with a hard question until you get it feels productive in the moment, but it isn’t free. Every extra minute spent fighting one question is a minute not spent on the questions still ahead of you.

The fix is disciplined ordering: do the questions that are easy for you first. That way, if you do run out of time, it happens on the questions you were more likely to miss anyway, not on the ones you would have gotten right if you’d reached them.
